Home safety checklist for seniors
Walk through the home room by room and check off each item. Anything left unchecked is a place to make a quick, meaningful improvement.
General & entryways
- Walkways and stairs are clear of clutter and cords
- Loose rugs removed or secured with non-slip backing
- Bright, even lighting throughout; nightlights in halls
- Sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs
- Entry steps are even, well-lit, and (in winter) kept clear of ice
Living areas
- Clear, wide walking paths between furniture
- Stable chairs with armrests for easy sitting/standing
- Frequently used items within easy reach (no step stools)
- Cords tucked safely along walls
Kitchen
- Everyday items stored between waist and shoulder height
- Non-slip mats at the sink; spills wiped promptly
- Working fire extinguisher within reach; stove used safely
Bathroom
- Grab bars by the toilet and in the shower/tub
- Non-slip mat inside and outside the tub/shower
- Shower seat and hand-held showerhead if helpful
- Water heater set to prevent scalding
Bedroom
- Lamp and phone within reach of the bed
- Clear, lit path to the bathroom; nightlight in place
- Bed at an easy height to get in and out of
Safety & emergencies
- Smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors tested and working
- Emergency numbers posted; 911 by the phone
- A fast way to call for help (medical alert or close contact)
- Supportive, non-slip footwear worn indoors and out
