Common questions
How do I know it is time to arrange respite care?
Most families wait longer than they should. The usual signals are broken sleep, your own medical appointments quietly going unbooked, a shorter temper over small things, and the feeling that you cannot leave the house without arranging something first. Respite is easier to begin before exhaustion sets in than after.
Will my family member accept a caregiver they have not met?
The first visit is usually the hardest part, and it tends to go better when it is introduced as company rather than as help. Many families arrange the first visit while they are still at home, so the introduction happens with a familiar face in the room, then step out on later visits.
Is respite care the same as adult day care?
No. Adult day care takes place at a centre, in a group, on set hours. Respite companion care happens in your family member's own home, one to one, around the routine they already keep. For someone who finds unfamiliar places unsettling, staying home is often the easier option.
What does the caregiver do while I am away?
The everyday companion support described above: conversation and activity, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, and steady company. The aim is that the day looks normal to your family member rather than supervised.
